This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a dare for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Married in reality in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the couple. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a slow burn fright fest, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, comfort one another, and open up at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
